Getting real about good eats.

This spring, we’ve dropped “Eat clean” from our credo. The short story is:  We want to get real about the vital role food plays in our wellbeing. Food is as important as fitness (if not MORE!). Real food rocks…especially veggies. Most of us need to up our intake. The term “eating clean” implies some foods are “dirty” or wrong, and maybe it’s time to get real about that, too. But there is a little more to the story. Since the beginning, Ange and I believed that a healthy lifestyle starts in the kitchen. We developed our company’s credo to help our members understand that a healthy lifestyle is about more than crushing the bands: Work out. Eat clean. Live fully. As the years went on, something about eating clean wasn’t feeling right. Over-the-top voices like Food Babe had us believing that “if you can’t pronounce it, it’s poison.” I won’t pretend we weren’t on-board with this concept, and am embarrassed that - based on this thinking - the graphic in this post would take bananas off the table as a “chemical-free food”. While detoxes and cleanses continued to soar in popularity, the science community was speaking up.  One day, my buddy Alex Cibiri of Element CrossFit posted this article featuring the headline, “Clean Eating is Useless”.  It hit my guts like a bowl of (delicious) chemical-laden mac and cheese.  I’d been feeling for months that we needed to ditch “Eat Clean”, but this article highlighted reasons we couldn’t ignore.  Based on the ways marketers were selling the concept, clean-eating started to to imply a food lifestyle that can be perceived...

All we did was google: “fitness magazine covers”. We actually pay people to tell us this sh!t. Even if we don’t buy these kinds of magazines, these messages still scream at us in the market line-up, on highway billboards, and worst of all, where we work out. Marketers need us to feel too old, too fat, and too skinny. We drank the juice, too. For years, WE were buying the same old crap for ourselves. Why? Because we’re born and raised in the fitness industry, where body-shaming was born.  Want proof? Just check out these unfathomable gym ads.  We all fall prey to the cycle of guilt, and we knew we had to do something to change it. It’s always been about taking the power back. This is why Rebellion was born: so we could band together to end the cycle. Listen, there is nothing wrong with wanting to lose weight, or to look and feel better. What needs to change is who decides how we feel about ourselves, and who decides what we do about it. There is one mother of a difference between striving for a healthy body weight, versus trying to sculpt a huge round butt and a 23 inch waist, just to be validated by Instagram likes.  Right? These messages affect all of us. If you have kids - hell, if you even know a kid - you should care about this A LOT. These are the messages kids and teens are seeing on social media every day. Canadian’s love summer weekends. After all, our summer is like 5 seconds long.  Living healthy doesn’t mean we won’t revel in good times.  What does set us apart is that we’ll be among the few people who don’t feel like total sh!t Sunday night - who’s with us? THE HURDLES Knowing what our challenges will be before the weekend rolls up means we’re better prepared to crush. We asked Revvers for their top reasons for falling off the goal train: Peer Pressure: Kids aren’t the only ones who crumble…this was actually the top answer by a landslide.  “I feel lame having a soda water or a single cocktail when everyone else is indulging around the campfire. I don’t want to feel like the odd man out.”  Feel familiar? THIS is how Rebels face a new day. In my mid 30s, I committed to Julia Cameron’s simple concept of Morning Pages: hand-writing 3 pages of random thoughts each morning.  It doesn’t matter what goes on those pages, what’s important for me is just getting some of the noise out of my mind so I can tackle the day with some focus.  As life became busier, this didn’t feel possible every day. While I still love this habit and can crush it a couple times weekly, what’s absolutely non-negotiable for me every morning is the Five Minute Journal. For me, some form of journalling and connecting with myself every morning is non-negotiable when it comes to keeping my sanity.  Morning Pages are tough, because mornings are bananas. For most people, the start of the day is filled with other people’s needs and a race with the clock, so finding time to sit for 15 minutes of journalling can seem self-indulgent and full-on impossible.  Lately, I’ve been using Tim Ferris’ book Tools of Titans to help me sit long enough to focus on my journalling.  I read a couple pages for inspo, then grab my pen. Tools of Titans is filled with success tips from zillions of brilliant super-champs Ferris has interviewed, along with his own reflections and gems. This morning my random flip opened the book to Super Size Me director Morgan Spurlock’s feature, where he mentions a t-shirt given to him at an Avatar event.  The James Cameron quote on the shirt stopped me in my tracks: Hope is not a strategy. When I was 17, I hurt my back working in a grocery store.  At 19, I was finally diagnosed with degenerative disks in my upper back and neck.  They told me that my 19 year old disks were in the condition of a healthy 60 year old’s, and I was informed that disability would worsen with age.  The doctors said there was nothing they could do, but that I could control how quickly the injury worsened. It was recommended that I give up my dream to teach (which I did not) and stay away from any high impact activities.  I was even told that I would probably have to get a breast reduction later in life.  As such a young woman, I was horrified.  Eventually, I just accepted that I would have chronic pain for the rest of my life and there was nothing I could do about it.  The pain just became a way of life and I found ways...
