Lessons from Mini-Rebels.

Lessons from Mini-Rebels.

The Monkey Bar Factor. A couple years ago I was just getting to know my now step kids.  Six and eight at the time, we were hanging out on a January morning at the park. The oldest was standing on top of a monkey bar dome with the little one half-way up the side, trying to figure it all out. “How did you get up there?” she asked. His response is actually something I think of this daily, and share with our Bandits at instructor training. “So here’s what you do,” he explained to his sister.  “First, you just climb as high as you can. Then when you’re afraid, you stop.” Ah, I thought. Interesting advice - just do your best and stop when the going gets a little intense. Very safe - responsible-brother advice.  Then he continued. “You close your eyes and ask yourself if you can go farther.  You have to listen to your gut here.” Wow, I thought - he’s getting into the gut!  I was intrigued to hear an 8 year-old’s advice on intuition.  I figured he’d say that if your gut tells you to chill where you are, then you chill…try harder next time. He continued: “If your gut tells you not to go any farther, you have to think really hard for a moment and make sure you’re just afraid. If you’re safe and you’re just scared, then you push against your fear and put ONE HAND on the next bar. Then you ask yourself again - are you safe? You put one foot, and one more hand. You just keep doing that until you get to the top.” I...
The YET Force

The YET Force

You will. The YET Force is inspired by “The Power of Yet”, part of scientist Carol Dweck’s “Growth Mindset”. Dweck observed that intelligence or ability isn’t fixed.  When students believe they can get smarter, they work harder to establish ability. When it comes to fitness and life in general, The YET Force can change your future. Is it that we can’t do Mountain Climbers? Or is it that we can’t do them YET?  We didn’t get that promotion, or we didn’t get it YET? Odds are that we just need to find THE GUTS to try harder and see just what it is we’re capable of.  We have to SEE our success and believe we can improve. This is The YET Force. Build “YET Force” Muscle. The YET Force is one of the most simple Rebel Superpowers to integrate. Let’s use it all day every day to completely redefine the story we tell ourselves about our own abilities. Rebel tricks. TURN IT AROUND.  Just like The GRIT Force, the best way to use this superpower is to REPHRASE.  Here’s our Rebel take on how to reposition I CAN’T into WATCH ME. I BLEW IT. Rebel Translation: Ok that didn’t work, what can I learn here? I CAN’T DO THIS. Rebel translation: I can’t do this YET, but I’m going to work harder to try. I SUCK AT CARDIO. Rebel translation: I’m gonna focus on building endurance, I can do this! I’LL NEVER BE FIT.  Rebel translation: Being fit is a process - I’m on that road and I won’t quit. THAT’S THE BEST I CAN DO. Rebel translation: That was pretty badass…what more have I...
